Foundation’s another thrust and focus is women empowerment. Women in our country are still the victims of orthodox social system and unhealthy environment. In order to strengthen women from underprivileged section, Deva Foundation’s flagship initiative – SAMBAL, a vocational training center was started in 2012. With the aim of empowerment, women and young girls are put through structured courses of mehendi, stitching, sewing, motor driving, jewelry making, wax work, art & craft, paper quilling, computer training, tally, English speaking, gardening and karate classes. These translatable skills from the bench to their homes give them an opportunity to be financially independent, confidant, and self-reliant. It has 3 branches – 2 in Varanasi and 1 in Chunar. Since its inception 80000 girls and women have completed their training programs. Whole idea behind this is that they could earn their livelihood and sustain their family.

Ms. Mohini Jhanwar, director took the lead for program started it as a vocational training center. With the blessings of Late Dr. M.R. Jhanwar and guidance of Dr. Venu Gopal Jhanwar, Sambal started its work with few of the training courses which now multiplied to numerous courses successfully reintegrating the women in need of care and support.
Women and young girls are put through structured courses of:
- Motor driving for 1 month
- Mehendi for 1 month
- Stitching for 3 months
- Paper quilling for 1 month
- Defence classes – Karate training for 1 month
- Gardening
- Embroidery and thread work for 2 months
- Kroshiya and knitting for 1 month
- Imitation jewellery making for 1 month
- Wax work and candle making for 1 month
- Painting and poster making for I month
- Paper craft for 1 month
- English speaking for 3 months
- Computer training for 3 months
- Tally for 3 months
Further plans are:
- Plumbing
- Electrician
- Pottery
- Special training for care of old age and specially-abled children
- Trained caregivers for caring persons afflicted with mental illnesses
These translatable skills from the bench to their homes give them an opportunity to be financially independent, confident, powerful and self reliant. Trained girls and women can seek employment through various schemes run by Deva Foundation and thus, sustainability is added to their empowerment.

SWACH BHARAT ABHIYAN
SAMBAL always tries to contribute to our society in its unique ways. For this started Swacch Bharat Abhiyan in Banaras city with the contribution of the girls receiving training at centre in form of their Shram Daan.
DISTRICT LEVEL MEHENDI COMPETITIONS
SAMBAL is organising district level competition since year 2013. The competition is theme based and always tries to spread social message in society. The themes are like”bati bachao, beti padhao, “naari ke vibhinn roop”, mahial shahshaktikaran, Bhrun hatya” Every year about 500 girls and women participate in this competition and win cash prizes. The judges are always who are experts of field of art and designing. Along with first, second and third prize, there are 10 consolation prizes. The candidates from all over districts and adjoining districts come and join the competition. All of them receive participation certificates.
EXHIBITIONS & STALLS
SAMBAL tries to provide employment and sales opportunities to trained girls and women via promoting the skills and products through Diwali melas, Rakhi Mela, Mehendi stalls on special occasions like sawan Melas, Teez Melas, Karyashala, Exhibitions etc. in National conferences, Business meetings, expos, Workshops, Seminars, Haat etc.
SUMMER CAMP
Sambal has started summer camp of 15 days where varied courses of paper craft, cooking, wax art, mehendi, painting and quilling were introduced to girls and women. They have their hands on 2-3 products of each of each course. Certificates are given to all participants, and the best performer wins the prizes too.
CORPORATE GIFTS – SAMBAL products are also promoted as attractive corporate gifts and on order the products like quilling clocks, toran, wax diyas, wax candles, paper envelopes, newspaper pen stands and many other quilling, craft and painting products.
CUSTOMIZED GIFTS – We prepare customised gifts under our skill based training courses of art & craft, quilling, painting, moti work, wax work, Imitation jewellery making, etc
MEHENDI – the trained girls are available for mehendi designs on occasions of marriage, teez, sawan mela etc

Periodically free health camps are organised by renowned doctors in the city considering women general health and reproductive health. In each camp about 300-400 women and girls are provided with free consultation and awareness.
Many a times there were situation when parents support were not with the girls coming to centres. To seek their cooperation in completion of different courses these sessions are organised.
